About

This tiny little website on a tiny little computer in a tiny little room in sprawling desert metropolis.

Hardware

kznjk.com is hosted on a teeny-tiny Dell OptiPlex 3080 that lives in my craft room below my sewing table. It runs on 6 cores (12 threads) of 10th-gen Intel i5 fury (at a whopping 35W, making it the most power-hungry device in my home, aside from my laptop.) It has access to 32GB of RAM and shares resources with several other containers including my personal Nextcloud instance, Matrix chat server, a personal wiki, and a karaoke server. An mdadm software RAID-1 made up of four (4) 4TB HDDs holds everything up and lends some stability (assuming my house never burns down and my internet never goes out.) A series of re-purposed battery backup systems with aftermarket Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries keeps everything going when the power gets jiggled.

Software

Our host operating system is Debian. A Docker container actually keeps everything ticking along. Home Assistant (on a separate computer) keeps track of all of the UPS power backups and will report to the server if any issues are found — at that point, the Matrix server alerts me to any issues. Every Friday the server nodes in my house all perform updates and send me a text log of the updates and will send me multiple messages in the event of an update failure. I will even sometimes fix them that weekend.

Human

Steve was born in Yuma, Arizona. It was too hot. He moved somewhere less hot, but only technically. His two dogs, Scuffs and Petunia, rock ass and are the best. His wife is the funniest person alive.
